President of the National Assembly Visits Johannes Lepsius House-Museum
On September 26 the delegation led by the President of the National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan visited Johannes Lepsius House-Museum in Potsdam. The delegation is in Germany on a working visit and is comprised of Artak Davtyan, Head of the Armenia-Germany Friendship Group, Gegham Gharibjanian, NA Cheif of Staff, Armen Martirosyan, Armenian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the FRG.
The NA President Hovik Abrahamyan took a tour in the Johannes Lepsius House-Museum, and met with the scientific staff of the Museum. Hanz-Ulrich Shultz, Director of the
House
Museum,
Chairman of “Johannes Lepsius” NGO Council, presented Lepsius’ life and activity in detail.
Johannes Lepsius, German public figure, clergyman, orientalist, had been engaged in Armenian Cause for many years. He condemned the Turkish authorities’ actions directed to the Armenians’ annihilation and claimed to exert efforts for stopping the Armenian massacres.
In his works he has proven that Armenian Genocide was perpetrated in Western Armenia and in the Armenian-populated
settlements of the
Ottoman Empire
during the World War I. Lepsius took part in the organization of strikes against the Armenian Genocide, and stressed in his speeches that the crime had been committed by the Turkish Government under the leadership of sultan. “German-Armenian Company” had been established on his own initiative for the help towards the Western Armenians, and his article titled “The Annihilation of an Entire Nation” was published in a Swiss newspaper in September 1915, which launched a big pro-Armenian campaign. “If there is a nation which is called to become a bearer of high culture with its natural features, it is the Armenian nation,” Johannes Lepsius has written. Mr. Shultz presented the NA President the work by Lepsius “The Armenians’ Situation in
Turkey
.”
Addressing those present, the Head of the Armenian Parliament considered Lepsius’ role inappreciable in marking the beginning of the international recognition process of the Armenian Genocide. In his word, Armenian people remember Lepsius with gratitude, as he was the first to voice in his works and articles the mass annihilation and massacres perpetrated at state level towards the Armenians in the
Ottoman Empire
.
Hovik Abrahamyan has expressed hope that the first genocide, which occurred in the beginning of the 20th
century, will enjoy the universal recognition and condemnation and the historic justice will be restored. “Johannes Lepsius, left alone in the struggling for the Armenian people, tried to do the most possible for suspending the Armenians’ massacres.
He struggled against violence and injustice, cruelty and brutality, in future devoting his life to the charity aimed at improving the destiny of the Armenians dispersed all over the world. That’s why I would say that the importance of this Memory Hall overpasses not only the boundaries of
Brandenburg
Land
, but also those of
Germany
. We indeed take Dr. Lepsius’ life as a part of the Armenian history of the period,” stated Hovik Abrahamyan. “The recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide is not only the task of the Armenian people, but also that of the entire international community, as the failure of timely recognition and condemnation paved a path for the genocides and ethnic massacres around different corners of the world during the 20th
century. Thus, the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide by the international society and especially,
Turkey
- the legal successor of the
Ottoman Empire,
we take as the best pledge for the deterrence of such crimes.” In the NA President’s word, the
Republic
of
Armenia
also attaches a great importance to the restoration of the historical justice between the two neighbouring countries in the context of improving the atmosphere of mutual confidence in the region. “
Turkey
should follow the example of
Germany
that recognized the Holocaust as a historic reality, and recognize the Armenian Genocide,” said the NA President. Hovik Abrahamyan noted that on the initiative of the President of the
Republic
of
Armenia Serzh Sargsyan
an attempt was made for the rapprochement of the relations between
Armenia
and
Turkey,
for the improvement without preconditions. Under high international mediation protocols on opening the borders and establishing diplomatic relations were signed in
Zurich.
“Unfortunately,
Turkey
was not, and is not ready today to carry the started process through, putting forward preconditions immediately after signing the protocols, which is absolutely unacceptable for the Armenian side. At the same time I consider it necessary to note that by seeking to improve the relations with
Turkey,
Armenia
has never made question of the Armenian Genocide and the truth of losing the Motherland. The international community is aware of the fact that
Armenia
has always come up with constructive initiatives,” noted Hovik Abrahamyan.
In the end of the meeting the NA Speaker left a note in the Book of Honourable Guests.
The delegation headed by the NA President visited "
Cecilienhof
Palace"
in
Potsdam,
where the well-known 1945 Potsdam Conference was held.
On September 27 the meeting of the RA NA President Hovik Abrahamyan with Norbert Lammert, President of the Bundestag, is scheduled, and in the evening the Armenian parliamentary delegation will be visiting the festive concert and official reception dedicated to the 20th
anniversary of the
Independence
of the
Republic
of
Armenia
held in the big Concert Hall of Berlin.
