There are Two Ways to Spread Light, thinks Artur Baghdasaryan
- Mr. Baghdasaryan, on August 29 NA extraordinary session will be convened for adopting the draft of the constitutional amendments in the second reading. To your opinion what position will have opposition?
- The participation of the opposition in the processes of the constitutional amendments is of great importance. Me, as NA President, consider important to have the constitutional amendments made in the atmosphere of wide public agreement. Eventually, we shall be aware that the amendments refer not only to the present of the country, but the future. The acting Constitution proved repeatedly its viability but during these years a necessity of reforms arose, taking into account the development of the country and the proposals of the world community. The Constitution is for long time and is for everybody. Based on this philosophy I again address our opposition colleagues to be ready till August 29 extraordinary session to discuss their all proposals. My doors are always open, they can present their constructive proposals to have on August 29 more reformed text. I invite everybody to cooperation on the constitutional amendments. Eventually, if we speak on the necessity of having democratic Armenia, we should start from the Basic Law of the country. The democracy should be much more law than an exception from laws, that’s why we should begin from the Basic Law, which will suppose a real separation of the power wings, free, protected system of human rights, independent judicial system, strong local self government, free press.
- PACE President Rene van der Linden distinctly indicated at the press conference that in case of the failure of the referendum of the Constitution sanctions will be applied towards Armenia. In our opinion, what is expected to Armenia?
- I think that the constitutional reforms refer not only to the authorities of Armenia or opposition, but the country and the people. The prospect of being disgraced cannot favourable to any force that thinks about the future of the country. The agreement of the public at the utmost in this matter is a necessity. Of course, punitive measures will be, and they will refer not to Armenia-CE, but Armenia-European Union relations, and it means worsening of relations with over 50 countries and various international organizations, which is not necessary to anybody. I’m convinced that the constitutional reforms, first of all, are needed for Armenia, then – to CE or EU. We should think about this. Eventually there are two ways of spreading light: or you can light or become the mirror, which reflects the light.
