Message by the President of the National Assembly Galust Sahakyan on Samvel Shahmuradyan’s 60th Birth Anniversary
1 / 1

At the beginning of the February 25 NA four-day sittings the President of the National Assembly Galust Sahakyan sent a message on Samvel Shamuradyan’s 60th birth anniversary. The message particularly reads:

“Dear colleagues,

Today marks the 60th birth anniversary of one of the best representatives of the Armenian intelligentsia, our untimely dead colleague, deputy of the Supreme Council, freedom fighter, journalist and publicist Samvel Shamuradyan.

It is painful that we should talk in the past tense about him. However, Samvel Shahmuradyan in his short but full biography is always in the present tense.

I am confident that all those who have at least known Samvel Shahmuradyan a little do not doubt at all that he as an intellectual and public-political figure today will be one of the active participants of the foreign and inner life of our country, and of course, in the hottest lines of the border and contact line, where he died in 1992 while fulfilling his duty as an intellectual, deputy and freedom fighter defending the Motherland.

That duty was neither an obligation, nor a constraint of any written law but during his whole life Samvel Shahmuradyan never ignored the non-written but widely accepted laws of loving morality and humanity, the Motherland and state. And his activity of a journalist, writer and deputy of the Supreme Council was anchored on all this. And as a result of all that, in 1989 his operative documentary record about the genocide of the Sumgait Armenians entitled “The Sumgait Tragedy by the Eyewitnesses’ Testimony” was born based on the eyewitnesses’ smouldering stories and memories and, as a direct evidence-message, was addressed to the civilized mankind.

Today Samvel Shamuradyan is not with us but his work and name are. Let our sustained memory about him be a tribute to our colleague.”
