Press Conference of the Committee Members of Armenia-European Union Parliamentary Cooperation
1 / 1

On December 6 the press conference of the Co-Chair of the Committee Members of Armenia-European Union Parliamentary Cooperation Naira Zohrabyan and committee members Vardan Ayvazyan, Larisa Alaverdyan, Koryun Nahapetyan and Artak Zakaryan was held, where they presented details from the 11th Armenia-European Union Parliamentary Cooperation meeting, which took place in Brussels on December 1-2.

Naira Zohrabyan said that the two-day agenda of the meeting was full and included the existing all problems on EU-Armenia agenda, and there were discussions on the NK problem and Armenia-Turkey relations. As the problem of the cultural heritage was included in the agenda, according to preliminary agreement, the video film The Vandals of the 21st Century: Jugha was shown during the meeting, where it was presented how the Azerbaijani military servicemen were destroying the centuries-long Armenian cross stones. According to Mrs. Zohrabyan, it impressed the deputies of the European Parliament. In that connection, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and the representation of Azerbaijan in Brussels submitted a compliant to the European Parliament why the latter permitted the Armenian delegation to show, by their assessment, a disinformation film in the building of the European Parliament.

At the end of Armenia-European Union Parliamentary Cooperation meeting a joint statement was adopted, which the Co-Chair Naira Zohrabyan assesses balanced. According to her, in the statement the most important provisions in the prior problems for us have been recorded. In this context, she said that months ago the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation meeting was held, during which the parties could not come to an agreement and a joint statement had not been adopted.

In the statement in the part pertaining to the NK conflict Naira Zohrabyan especially emphasized the provision, according to which, all the parties of the conflict should be involved in the negotiation process, and in the part of Armenia-Turkey relations it was urged Turkey to take necessary steps without preconditions, and in accordance with the adopted resolutions by the European Parliament establish diplomatic and good neighbourly relations with Armenia and open the closed order as soon as possible.

The Co-Chair of the Committee Members of Armenia-European Union Parliamentary Cooperation Naira Zohrabyan said that the next 12th meeting of the Committee would take place in Yerevan in November 2011.

The Committee members also introduced their viewpoints. They emphasized the joint agreed work of the team, as a result of which the joint statement was adopted. Larisa Alaverdyan noted that the problems being in the center of attention of her and the Heritage party gradually had beneficiary wordings in the international documents. Mrs Alaverdyan gave a speech on the Electoral Code in the meeting, underlining that there was progress in Armenia in this sphere, however the steps taken were not sufficient for the establishment of legal state. Vardan Ayvazyan noted that on parts of economy, NK and Turkey the most important recordings had been made in the joint staement. He considered unprecedented the provision of the statement, which cited the resolution on the political solution of the Armenian issue of the European Parliament on June 13, 1987, by which the Armenian Genocide was recognized. Artak Zakaryan emphasized the everyday work of the Armenian diplomatic representation in the European structures. In this context he noted that the adopted joint statement was also one progressive step. Koryun Nahapetyan considers the adopted statement in the parliamentary format a successful diplomatic step, as the final statement and the proposals stem from the interests of the Republic of Armenia.

The Committee members answered the journalists’ questions too.
