Press Conference of the Armenian Delegation to PACE

On February 2 the press conference of the RA NA Delegation to the PACE was held in the National Assembly.

The Head of the delegation Hermine Naghdalyan, the members Arpine Hovhannisyan and Naira Karapetyan presented details about the works of the PACE first plenary session of this year held in Strasbourg on January 26-30.

Hermine Naghdalyan has said that the agenda of the plenary session has been rather full, the authorities of the delegations have been approved, the PACE bodies have been elected and a number of reports have been discussed.

The Armenian delegation also actively took part in the PACE Bureau report. The two of the discussed reports referred to the humanitarian crisis created in Ukraine and the terrorism problems in the world.

A series of reports related to the issues of freedom of press and the journalists’ protection, the displayed discrimination and intolerant attitude towards Christians. The issue of suspending the authorities of the RF delegation until April, to which according to Hermine Naghdalyan, the Armenian delegation voted abstained. After the decision made the RF delegation in its turn made a decision to suspend its participation in the PACE works.

The Head of the Armenian delegation to the Assembly Hermine Naghdalyan informed with satisfaction that the member of the delegation Arpine Hovhannisyan was elected the main member of the Committee on the Election of Judges to the European Court. She has detailed that the abovementioned Committee comprised of 20 members, out of them 6 members, as well as Arpine Hovhannisyan’s candidate, presented the European People’s Party. Besides, the PACE deputies have initiated a new movement, the goal of which is to fight against hatred, intolerance and denial. Hermine Naghdalyan and Mher Shahgeldyan are members of this movement from the Armenian delegation.

In response to the journalists’ questions, the Head of the delegation informed them that during the free discussion the participants touched upon the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide, where the Armenian delegates talked about the genocide and the inadmissibility of the denial policy being implemented today.
