Parliament Debates Issue of Electing RA Prime Minister

On May 3, at the special sitting of the National Assembly, the issue of electing the RA Prime Minister was debated.

The viewpoint of the NA Bright Armenia Faction presented Edmon Marukyan. According to the Head of the faction, the way of going to the snap parliamentary elections is a process without an alternative, and in essence, the reached agreements function, there was no deviation related to the dissolution of the parliament.

Edmon Marukyan informed that they had worked out a text and call on the political forces to join that text, recording that the political units will not use a hate speech during the campaign.

Alen Simonyan voiced the viewpoint of the NA My Step Faction . On behalf of My Step Faction the NA Deputy Speaker congratulated on Press Freedom Day, underlining that freedom of the press recorded flight growth in Armenia after the revolution.

Referring to Edmon Marukyan’s proposal, he has noted that their faction is ready to debate it.

The NA Deputy Speaker has informed that My Step Faction, remaining loyal to the political agreements, will vote abstained on the issue of electing the Prime Minister.

In his final speech, the candidate for the RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan referred to the deputies’ interpellations. Speaking about the RA security, the Acting Prime Minister underscored that both before and after the war the RA external security system was not changed. The system was based on having a joint Armenian-Russian military corps and a collective security, air defense system in the Caucasus region. Nikol Pashinyan referred to the viewpoints that a number of decisions created a new threat of security, for example, for Syunik Marz. According to the candidate of the Prime Minister, actually the opposite happened. The protection of all RA borders both before the war and now is carried out by the forces and efforts of the Armenian-Russian joint military group. But it does not mean that combat positions should be put in all places.

It was stated that 2 new bases of the Russian 102 military base have been established in Syunik Marz, and its creation is an additional guarantee to ensure the security of Syunik Marz and also the Republic of Armenia. Nikol Pashinyan reminded that the security system was spread across the RA borders and the RA National Assembly gave a description of the borders by the law of 2010 on Administrative-Territorial Division.

Nikol Pashinyan underlined: “The power will not be changed in Armenia, because the power belongs to the nation, it is unchangeable”.

The NA Speaker Ararat Mirzoyan has informed that pursuant to Article 140.5 of the constitutional law the NA Rules of Procedure, the Prime Minister is elected by the majority vote of the deputies’ total number.

The Head of the NA My Step Faction Lilit Makunts has informed that My Step Faction will vote abstained.
