At the invitation of the RA NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan on February 25 the delegation led by the Speaker of the Parliament of the Hellenic Republic Vangelis Meimarakis arrived in Yerevan on a two-day official visit.
In Zvartnots Airport the high-ranking guest met the RA NA Deputy Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov and the RA NA Chief of Staff Gurgen Dumanyan.
After the official protocol ceremony of the reception, the Head of the Parliament of the Hellenic Parliament and the delegation led by him left for Tsitsernakaberd.
Vangelis Meimarakis and the members of the delegation laid a wreath and flowers at the memorial of the Armenian Genocide and paid their tribute with silence, bowing to the memory of one and a half million innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide.
The high ranking guest planted a fir-tree in the Memory Park.
Sharing his impressions with the journalists, the Speaker of the Parliament of the Hellenic Republic Vangelis Meimarakis noted: “We have come to lay down a wreath and flowers with great respect. As you know, the Hellenic Parliament has recognized and denounced the Armenian genocide, and I express the whole Greek people’s, deputies’, ministers’, politicians’ opinion.
It is a great honour and joy for me to be in Armenia. Greece and Armenia are states of common values and principles.
In Armenia the Greeks feel that they are in their Motherland, Greece, and in Greece the Armenians feel that they are in their Motherland, Armenia.
I am confident that the two countries established a rather good cooperation and I hope that there is a necessary potential for further enlarging it.
Our visit to Armenia is symbolic and of a big importance, as Greece has assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union.”
