On June 11 the Chairman of the RA NA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs Koryun Nahapetyan met with John Ringguth, Executive Secretary to MONEYVAL Committee of the Council of Europe (CoE), and John Baker, Head of Unit of the Committee Secretariat.
Welcoming the guests Koryun Nahapetyan has noted they have been to Armenia for an important initiative, particularly, within the framework of MONEYVAL Committee 5th evaluation. “Fighting money laundering and financing of terrorism is of special importance for us and with that respect the formation of the decent legal system, as well as its effective use is important for us,” the Committee Chairman said and highlighted the role and importance of MONEYVAL Committee in terms of implementing evaluation in the MONEYVAL member states.
Koryun Nahapetyan has informed that Armenia is a MONEYVAL member state, and during that whole period our country has passed different phases of evaluation and progress reports.
Koryun Nahapetyan noted that a big amount of work has been done in terms of complying the legislation with the international standards, as well as of providing its effective use and as a result of implemented evaluations by MONEYVAL, the legislation had been improved.
Thanking for the warm reception, John Ringguth, Executive Secretary to MONEYVAL Committee, highlighted and highly assessed the harmonization of Armenia’s legislation with the international standards and the adoption of the legislative package “On Fighting against Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism” and its effective use, as well as the improvement of the Criminal Code in terms of recognizing legal persons as entities with criminal responsibility, which gives an opportunity to more effectively fight against financing of terrorism and money laundering.
Once again emphasizing the visit of the representatives of the MONEYVAL Committee to the National Assembly of Armenia, the Committee Chairman Koryun Nahapetian expressed confidence that the cooperation with the Committee would be continuous.
