RA National Assembly Speaker Samvel Nikoyan Receives the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia

On January 30 the Speaker of the National Assembly Samvel Nikoyan received the Ambassador Philip Lefort, European Union (EU) Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia.

Welcoming the guest the NA Speaker expressed hope that within the format of the authorities he would have his contribution to the settlement of the regional problems. Samvel Nikoyan has expressed satisfaction with the level of last years’ development of the Armenia-European Union relations, noting that the political dialogue of high level and mutual visits contribute to that too.

Thanking for the reception the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia, congratulated Samvel Nikoyan on being elected in the post of the Speaker of the National Assembly. He has noted that the Armenia-EU relations are dynamically developing and getting closer, which is based on bilateral interests.

The interlocutors touched upon the regional problems. In connection with the NK conflict Philip Lefort has said that the EU supports the activities of the OSCE Minsk Group, and the Madrid principles have no alternative. He has stressed the necessity of reaching reconciliation of the parties through dialogue, noting that the EU has a rich history of reconciliation. The European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia has announced that the EU is for the peaceful solution of the issue.

The RA NA Speaker has noted that the dialogue is the only way leading to the settlement of the conflicts, and Armenia has repeatedly announced its readiness of solving the problem through peaceful way.

Both sides considered inadmissible the military rhetoric and the announcements of solving the problem through war.
