On January 25 Hrayr Karapetyan, Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs, met with Mr. William Lahue, the newly appointed NATO Liaison Officer in the Caucasus.

Issues pertaining to the results and further works of Armenia-NATO cooperation were discussed.

Mr Karapetyan presented the process of the reforms designed by the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP), the legislative and supervising works done by the committee in that direction, highly appreciating the role of the NATO in the implementation of the reforms programme in the sphere of the RA Defense. In particular, within the framework of this cooperation he highlighted the activation of the public and parliamentary oversight towards the armed forces and also proposed to call into life exchange of experience and educational new programmes with the same consistency.

Mr William Lahue expressed willingness to support the implementation of any proposal, which can contribute to the reforms of the sphere. He has said that the NATO Headquarters is concerned about establishing close relations with the Armenian Parliament and civil society, being convinced that the civil oversight towards the armed forces is the most important factor of democracy.
