German Musicians in the Parliament

On June 12 within the framework of the programme Weeks of Germany 2009 the final concert of German tenor Christoph Scheben and pianist Stewart Emerson took place in the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia. It was initiated by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and RA Ministry of Culture. The musicians, who have world acclaim, performed works written by well-known composers Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Johannes Brahms, Franz Schubert and Richard Strauss in the Green Room of the National Assembly.

The exhibition of the photos dedicated to Armenia by the former FRG Ambassador to Armenia Hans-Wolf Bartels was opened in parallel with the concert.

The event attended NA Vice Speaker Mr. Samvel Nikoyan, Deputy Minister of Culture Mr. Davit Muradyan, deputies, Ambassadors, representatives of international organizations, members of the staff of the National Assembly.

Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Mr. Artak Davtyan expressed his gratitude to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and personally to the Ambassador Mrs. Andrea Wiktorin and expressed hope that such cultural events would be continuous. Mr. Davtyan read the address of RA NA President Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan, where, in particular, it said:

“Ladies and gentlemen!

Dear guests!

We are glad to greet you in the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.

The fact that this musical matinee, which takes place in Armenia and in the South Caucasus within the framework of the Weeks of Germany, is held in the Armenian Parliament is not by chance. When the German Embassy asked us with this proposal we immediately decided to accept it.

The Armenian-German relations have glorious history. Armenian-German close contacts have been recorded during the period of Sacred Roman Empire. The German educational system and universities played a great role in the life of Armenian intellectuals, scientists, artists and politicians of the new period of the Armenian history. European knowledge and system of values through those educational institutions entered into Armenian reality.

The hard and tragic history of the 20th century of Germany is a unique lesson for Armenia and our neighbours. Our neighbours shall follow Germany’s example and vigilantly re-evaluate their history. And we, Armenians, shall take an example from Germans how they invincibly fought after the separation of the country for the self-determination of the German people and reached the re-unification of two German states.

Today Europe is different, and that change shall be spread on our region and the whole world. Germany, being the leader of the European Union, makes even a considerable contribution with its example in establishing long-lasting peace and stability in the South Caucasus. We feel the good will and invaluable assistance of Germany. We are sure that the Armenian-German friendship will continue to develop.

We welcome you once again in the National Assembly and wish you nice matinee.

Thank you!”

Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Armenia Mrs. Andrea Wiktorin expressed her gratitude to NA President Mr. Hovik Abrahamyan, the former and current chairmen of the NA Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture and Youth Mr. Armena Ashotyan and Mr. Artak Davyan for the support of the initiative and for warm reception, which once again ensures the existing warm relations between two countries at parliamentary level.

Mrs. Wiktorin also said that recently the musicians performed in Yeghegnadzor and Jermuk and received warm reception.
