On June 17, the Vice President of the National Assembly of Armenia Ruben Rubinyan received the delegation headed by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE) Marija Pejčinović Burić.
At the meeting the deputy of the Civil Contract Faction Eduard Aghajanyan and the deputy of the Armenia Faction Armen Gevorgyan attended the meeting.
Ruben Rubinyan evaluated the cooperation with the CoE and the support of the structure to the process of the democratic reforms going on in our country. “The consistent reforms were implemented in Armenia in strengthening democracy, including the support of the Council of Europe, due to which great progress was made in the process of the fulfillment of the obligations assumed by Armenia,” the NA Deputy Speaker underlined.
Ruben Rubinyan touched upon the current humanitarian problems unsolved until now because of the aggression against Artsakh in 2020. He drew the guests’ attention, particularly, to the issue of the destiny of Armenian prisoners of war and other held persons. The NA Vice President expressed hope that the Council of Europe will be more resolute in the issue of repatriation of these people.
Ruven Rubinyan voiced about the anti-Armenian and bellicose rhetoric of the authorities of Azerbaijan, noted that the provocative statements towards Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh continue. He stressed that the Armenian historical-cultural and spiritual heritage on the territories passed under control of Azerbaijan is endangered.
According to the CoE Secretary General, the procedure of democratic reforms is noticeable in Armenia.
The sides highlighted the full implementation of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Armenia 2019-2022, which includes a wide scope of issues of vital importance for any democracy.
