On March 1, the Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs Koryun Nahapetyan met with Steffen Elgersma, Officer on Armenia of NATO Political Relations and Security Policy Division.
Koryun Nahapetyan has noted that within the framework of the cooperation with the Euro-Atlantic structures Armenia continues making the reforms in the defense and security spheres. Ha has added that the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) remains an important format for the RA-NATO cooperation. In this context Mr Nahapetyan distinguished the main directions of the activities led by him within the IPAP: expansion of democratic and civil control towards the armed forces, strengthening of parliamentary oversight towards the defense and security spheres, improvement of the Committee capabilities, and the involvement of the civil society in the defense and elaboration processes of the security policy.
In the course of the meeting the sides touched upon the Constitutional reforms made in our country, the works of the formation of the new legislation corresponding with the Constitutional amendments. In Koryun Napaetyan’s word, new laws should also be passed on defense and security spheres, which should be directed to the rise of the level of protection of human rights and strengthening of building integrity. The Committee Chairman noted that by the Constitution bases were created in the defense and security spheres for the parliamentary oversight, particularly, the rise of the government accountability and the upgrading of the Committee’s oversight tool set.
Steffen Elgersma talked about the goal of his visit, presented his viewpoint on the work being done within the IPAP by Armenia, highly assessing the registered results and the procedure of the reforms being made. The interlocutors expressed readiness to promote the IPAP effective implementation and its continuity, highlighting the legislative reforms of the defense and security spheres.
