Lublin Meetings

On March 18 the delegation led by RA National Assembly Chairman Artur Baghdasaryan visited Lublin within the framework of the official visit to the Republic of Poland. The NA Chairman met Lublin governor Andrzej Kurowski, Henryk Makarewicz, Marshall of the Lubelskie Voivodeship, as well as heads of industrial entities, and rectors of higher educational institutions of the region.

The Lublin g overnor detailed on economic, agricultural, scientific-cultural life of the Voivodeship, which has the area of 22,000sq kilometers and population of 2,300,000. Armenians who established settlements in the region back in the Middle Ages continue to play an active role in the Voivodeship. Lublin University after Marie Sklodowska-Curie used to maintain scientific ties with the Yerevan State University.

Expressing gratitude for warm welcome Artur Baghdasaryan invited Andrzej Kurowski to Armenia to give impetus to the partnership, elaborate practical projects on the scene.

The partnership will trigger the development of bilateral relations, Lublin governor assessed. “The Poles and the Armenians have known each other and been friends for quite a long time the past ages left numerous monuments of the friendship in our Voivodeship. Today we must only complete what they’ve begun by taking determined actions. We can help each other in educational, cultural, industrial and agricultural spheres. We must work together to reach feasible results. Polish legislation defines that Voivodeship self-government body adopts a treaty and we will imminently sign partnership agreement with one of the Armenian marzes once some procedure mechanisms are overcome.”

A partnership agreement is expected to be signed between Lubelskie Voivodeship and RA Gegharkunik marz.

Delegation members visited Majdanek Concentration Camp situated in Lublin’s vicinity. Some 250,000 people were killed there during the Second World War. Artur Baghdasaryan laid a wreath to the Majdanek Memorial to Victims of Fascist Occupation on behalf of the delegation and left a record in the honorary guests register.

The Armenian delegation also visited the town of Zamosc. The NA Chairman discussed issues relating to inter-regional cooperation with the town mayor Ivona Stopcinsky.
