On April 14, the Chairman of the RA NA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs Koryun Nahapetyan met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) to Armenia Seyed Kazem Sadjadi.

Koryun Nahapetyan highly assessed the Ambassador’s readiness in making additional efforts in the development of the Armenian-Iranian relations and underlined that after the elimination of the punitive measures towards Iran necessity arose to take more practical steps in the conditions of new possibilities.

Talking about giving new impetus with concrete programmes of separate directions of bilateral cooperation, Ambassador Sadjadi has highlighted the role of the parliamentary diplomacy in that issue and is ready to actively cooperate with the RA Parliamentary Friendship Group and Standing Committees.

In the course of the meeting issues regarding the unprecedented aggression carried out by Azerbaijan towards NKR, the challenges arisen as its consequence and the military-political situation of the region were discussed.

Koryun Nahapetyan welcomed the IRI balanced position in the peaceful settlement of the NK conflict and touched upon the events occurred on the Karabakh-Azerbaijani border in recent days. He expressed conviction that in the extremely tense situation created in the region we should not let operations destabilizing the regional security. In this context Koryun Nahapetyan highlighted the targeted response of the international community, the states of the region and the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair countries to the ongoing events.

Seyed Kazem Sadjadi expressed condolences for the victims as a consequence of military operations and noted that Iran had been ready to act with the peaceful mediation between the conflicting parties.

Both sides also touched upon the bilateral cooperation and its perspectives in the sphere of defense and security, and highlighted the strengthening of cooperation between the defensive institutions of the two countries.

An agreement was reached between the sides to meet in the format of the working group and to discuss issues regarding the agenda.
