Meeting at the RA NA Standing Committee
1 / 3

On April 12, the Deputy Chairman of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Alexander Arzumanyan and the member of the Committee Tevan Poghosyan met with the General Director for Foreign Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Spain Enrique Benavente and the Deputy Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia of the same Ministry José Rodriguez. The RA Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Spain Avet Adonts also attended the meeting.

The interlocutors discussed issues concerning the activation of the relations and rapprochement between Spain and Armenia and highlighted the development of cooperation in the spheres of economy, culture and tourism. Those present considered important to set up a Friendship Group with Armenia after the parliamentary elections in Spain, which in its turn will promote the development of the Armenia-Spanish relations. The Armenian parliamentarians voiced the concerns which exist within the framework of the cooperation between the two countries’ MPs: particularly, the negative role of the PACE President, Spanish MP Pedro Agramunt was mentioned.

In the course of the meeting Alexander Arzumanyan and Tevan Poghosyan talked about the Nagorno Karabakh conflict problem, presented their positions over the ongoing events on the Karabakh-Azerbaijani Line of Contact in recent days. The Spanish side expressed its sorrow related to the victims and once again affirmed that the only way of the solution of the problem would be the peaceful negotiations.

Both sides touched upon the RA-EU relations: the Spanish side welcomed the new legal contract under debate with the EU, as well as expressed readiness to promote the development of the programmes aimed at the visa liberalization to the EU countries for the RA citizens. They also discussed Armenia’s transformation to the parliamentary model of government.
