The Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs Koryun Nahapetyan on April 18 met with the NATO international staff: Armenia Officer Steffen Ergelsma and the Liaison Officer of the South Caucasus Countries William Lahue.
During the meeting issues relating to Armenia-NATO cooperation were discussed.
Highlighting Armenia’s cooperation with the NATO and its Parliamentary Assembly, Koryun Nahapetyan noted that the Individual Partnership Action Plan had been implemented rather effective and had played an important role in the RA defensive reforms, particularly in the civil control of the armed forces and the provision of the sphere transparency. At the same time he expressed hope that the cooperation of mutual interest would be continuous and the role of the parliament and the committee led by him would be more significant in the implementation of those programs. He highlighted the involvement of the RA Armed Forces in the international peace-keeping mission and the Armenian parliamentarians’ active cooperation in the NATO PA works.
Koryun Nahapetyan also touched upon the decision of Armenia’s membership to the Customs Union, assessing it as an important step stemming from the priorities of the RA foreign policy.
The NATO regional officers highly assessed Armenia’s efforts in successfully implementing the joint programs and expressed satisfaction for the readiness of making it continuous.
In the course of the meeting issues regarding the geo-political new realities and regional security were also discussed.
