NA Deputy Speaker and the Members of Armenia-Latvia Friendship Group Meet with the Parliamentary Delegation of Latvia

On October 23 the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Head of Armenia-Latvia Friendship Group Eduard Sharmazanov, members of the Freindship Group Arpine Hovhannisyan and Karen Botoyan met with the Deputy Speakers of the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia Andrejs Klementjevs, Inese Libina-Egnere and the MP Dana Reizniece-Ozola.

In the course of the meeting issues concerning the development of the Armenian-Latvian parliamentary relations and continuous cooperation of Armenia with the European Union were discussed.

Eduard Sharmazanov highly assessed the development of the Armenian-Latvian relations, especially after the visit paid by the NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan to Latvia. He touched upon the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, assessing it as a necessary condition of preventing similar crimes, presented the Armenia’s efforts aimed at the regional security, particularly, solving the NK problem through peaceful negotiations. Talking about Armenia’s stance of joining the Customs Union, Eduard Sharmazanov has assured that the politics does not impede further activation of Armenia’s relations with the EU, moreover our country is ready to continue the process implementing the political reforms, continuing it by the cooperation with the EU.

The legislators of Latvia highlighted the effective use of mechanisms of parliamentary diplomacy in activating the cooperation. To their assessment, in order to reach big result we should use the opportunities of not only political, but also economic cooperation. The Latvian parliamentarians have assured that their country is ready to serve its experience of European integration and opportunities to the process of Armenia’s European integration.

By Arpine Hovhannisyan’s assessment, though the current level of the Armenian-Latvian cooperation is rather high, we should not be satisfied with the achievements, but we should go forward by using all the feasible opportunities.

During the meeting other issues of mutual interest were also discussed.
