On September 4 RA National Assembly Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan received the French world famous actor Gérard Depardieu, who was in our country to take part in the International Festival Karot being held in Armenia under the patronage of RA National Assembly Speaker.

Greeting the talented artist Hovik Abrahamyan said that he had thousands of fans in Armenia. His created characters have won the Armenian art lover’s sympathy long ago. RA NA Speaker noted that the Armenian-French friendship was on firm bases, and the visit of the world famous actor would more strengthen it.

Hovik Abrahamyan highly assessed the fact that Gérard Depardieu had visited the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial complex of the Armenian Genocide and underscored his civil posture. Moreover, the actor represents a country, which had given refuge to our compatriots, who hardly survived during the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

Gérard Depardieu noted that he knew Armenia thanks to the Armenian community living France.

The Speaker of the National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan considered significant that Gérard Depardieu had visited Armenia within the framework of the International Festival Karot because it played an important role in presenting the Armenian art. The Head of the Armenian Parliament proposed to hold the next festival in Paris, and Gérard Depardieu would be reserved the main role.

In Gérard Depardieu’s word, his visit to Armenia would also interest the people of art being in Europe in order they would come to Armenia and implement programmes here. Depardieu himself has intentions to bring European figures to Armenia and organize a film festival. He also plans to organize an international cultural programme in Armenia with the participation of the Armenians being in different countries of the world, through which the Armenian art of different times will be presented.

The Speaker of RA National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan expressed willingness to support such programmes, as such festivals would give opportunity to get familiarized with our country and culture. In this connection the NA Speaker again highlighted the role of Karot festival, which implements a very big and welcoming job.
