Currently, the right protection of breeders of new varieties of plants is not properly implemented in Armenia, and varieties imported from other countries are cultivated for production purposes without the breeder’s permission. As a result, conditioned by the lack of trust, the acquisition of competitive varieties that are in high demand for the farmers of the plant breeding sector is not available in our country. At the same time, obstacles are being created for foreign companies engaged in seed production and nursery production. The RA Deputy Minister of Economy Ashkhen Shirvanyan stated about this.

On May 17, the draft law on Making Amendments and Addenda to the Law on Protection of Plant Varieties was debated at the sitting of the RA NA Standing Committee on Territorial Administration, Local Self-Government, Agriculture and Environment Protection in the first reading.

To solve the mentioned problems, to ensure clearly defined legal regulations and to join the International Union for the Protection of New Plant Varieties, the Government presented a number of amendments and addenda. According to the Deputy Minister, relations regarding the creation, use, preservation, breeder’s right, invalid recognition and granting of a patent or termination of that right will be specified and adjusted. Thanks to the legal protection of new varieties of plants, the scientific-selection activity of the breeder in Armenia will become profitable.

The deputy of the RA NA Armenia Faction Garnik Danielyan highlighting the implementation of properly done works in the selection stations, mentioned that a clear strategy should be developed in that direction, necessary finances should be invested in the system so that many problems in agriculture are solved.
