32 km of North-South Highway Corridor to be reconstructed: NA debates draft to extend term of RA-EFSD Agreement

Within the framework of the programme, it is designed to reconstruct a 32 km long road around the North-South Highway Corridor (Agarak-planned Kajaran tunnel entrance). The Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Kristine Ghalechyan stated this.

At the plenary sitting of May 2, the Parliament debated the draft law on Ratifying Additional Agreement No. 4 of the Agreement on Construction of the North-South Highway Corridor between the Republic of Armenia and the Eurasian Development Bank (4th turn) for provision of an investment loan from the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development for the financing of the draft presented by the Government.

The Deputy Minister stated that it is planned to build 17 bridges and 2 tunnels.

The Deputy Minister assured that the reconstruction of the road section will lead to significant changes in traffic, will reduce the time to get from one point to another by 68 minutes.

The NA Vice President Hakob Arshakyan noticed that a programme of strategic importance is being debated in Parliament. He inquired to which settlement from the Iran-Armenia border is included in the programme, and what the progress of the Bagrushat tunnel design works is.

In response to the NA Vice President’s question, the key rapporteur informed that the re-constructed road section of the 4th turn of the construction of the North-South Highway Corridor is planned from the Iran-Armenia border to the entrance to the Kajaran tunnel.

The deputy of Armenia Faction Gegham Nazaryan also inquired when the construction work of Sisian-Agarak road section is planned to be completed, whether foreign construction organizations have submitted an application to participate in the construction works in Armenia. In response to the deputy’s questions, the Deputy Minister noted that the construction work of Sisian-RA-Iran border road section is planned to be carried out within 6 years and informed that many international organizations actively take part in the tenders announced for participation in construction works in RA.

The member of the Standing Committee on Financial-Credit and Budgetary Affairs Narek Grigoryan said that the draft was debated in the Committee and endorsed. The deputy called on to vote for the draft.

The NA Vice President Hakob Arshakyan also expressed his opinion on the draft.

During the extraordinary speech, the NA Vice President highly valued the approval of the RA- Eurasian Development Bank (EBD) loan programme and mentioned that as a result of the debate, the parliamentarians received a lot of information about the works being carried out in the southern direction of the North-South road section.

During the final speech, the Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure noted that with the adoption of the draft, the level of the road safety will be increased, it will become a priority direction from the viewpoint of international transportation, meeting all international standards.
