Parliamentary Engagement on Climate Change in Advancement Process of Agendas is Highlighted
1 / 5

We try to cooperate with our friends, including Armenia, to help them to succeed in prevention processes of the climate change: the COP26 Regional Ambassador for Europe, Central Asia, Turkey and Iran of the United Kingdom (the Climate Change Conference) David Moran said during the meeting with the deputies of the RA NA Civil Contract Faction, the members of Armenia-Great Britain Friendship Group Babken Tunyan, Meri Galstyan and Vahagn Aleksanyan.

On May 24, the meeting was held, where the Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the RA John Gallagher and the Trade and Prosperity Officer of the Embassy Artashes Davtyan also took part.

David Moran thanked the MPs for the reception, underlining that he gladly visits Armenia. He highlighted the role and the attention of parliament on the climate change agendas.

Babken Tunyan highlighted the joint and the coordinated work, noting that Armenia will try to fully carry out the assumed commitments.

Meri Galstyan presented the parliamentary engagement on the climate change in the advancement process of the agendas in the legislative field and on parliamentary oversight. She informed that the committees are always permanently connected with the executive body.

According to the MP, despite the pandemic and the overwhelming challenges of 2020 armed conflict, the RA Government continued drawing concentrated attention to the climate and environmental agenda. In particular, in 2021 the Government accepted the Nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) programmes. According to her, the decision of the Inter-Agency Council on Climate of the Government effectively simplified the decision making connected with the climate.

The parliament also observes the results of the quarterly, semi-annual and annual reports of the executive body.

Meri Galstyan emphasized the work being done with the public, as well as the study of the other parliaments’ experience.

Speaking about the electricity production, the deputy noted that until 2030 the aim of Armenia is to reach 15% of the solar energy share in the general electricity production, and the electricity production share will be 54% with zero emissions. This corresponds with the green zone principles, which serve as an important guideline and scale of ambitions on the way of the establishment of green agenda and sustainable development of Armenia.

The sides also referred to the issues on cooperation between parliaments of the two countries.
