The Concept of Peace Should Provide For the Children of Karabakh the Opportunity to Live Freely and Safe in Their Own Country: Armen Gevorgyan
1 / 1

On May 18, at the meeting of the PACE Sub-Committee on Children the Member of the RA NA delegation to PACE, the deputy of the Armenia Faction Armen Gevorgyan made a statement, noting:

Dear colleagues,

I would like to talk about the fact that there are places in the Council of Europe space where the rights of children, their problems and difficulties fall out of our attention. These are areas of unresolved conflicts.

In this regard, we have to talk not so much about how to work and communicate with children correctly, but about how to find ways and mechanisms for international organizations to have access to children in conflict zones.

During the last session of the Assembly, the Commissioner for Human Rights stated that she is not able to visit Nagorno-Karabakh and get to know the situation on the ground. The Azerbaijani authorities are against such a visit. Why? Because she can see how the Azerbaijani authorities create an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty about the future, especially for the young generation.

Once in Nagorno-Karabakh, representatives of our organization could ask the youth of this republic whether they imagine it as part of Azerbaijan, which is trying to destroy their homeland. They will get an answer to the question of whether it is possible to live as part of a state that recently deprived Nagorno-Karabakh of gas supply and put the population in a situation of extreme humanitarian catastrophe.

More than thirty years, ordinary European children have been living in independent Nagorno-Karabakh. With only one difference - they have a deep er sense of the Motherland and justice. Unlike many of their peers in Europe, they know what war and peace are, in the era of globalization they clearly understand and realize what independence is, how it is obtained and maintained. They are a rare phenomenon for modern Europe - they are the generation of independence.

Therefore, the concept of peace, which has no alternative for the entire region, should provide for the children of Karabakh , the opportunity to live freely and safe in their own country and be confident in the future. Any other solution will not bring real peace and stability to the entire South Caucasus.

I propose to think about how Karabakh boys and girls can be heard by us and involved in the processes of a pan-European dialogue to protect their rights and freedoms.
