Term for Issuing Passports with Non-Biometric Data to Be Extended
1 / 10

At December 7 NA sitting, in order to adopt it in the second reading and in full, the parliament debated the draft law on Making Amendments and Addenda to the Law on Passport of the Citizen of the Republic of Armenia and on Making Amendments and Addenda to the Law on Identity Cards authored by the Government.

According to the RA Deputy Head of Police Ara Fidanyan, the aim of the initiative is to resolve the problems that have risen in the legal practice and to bring in line the legal provisions regulating the same field. Under the proposed amendments, the passports will be issued to male citizens under the age of 16 and over the age of 16, until they reach the age of 19, and in case of reaching the age of 19, with the period of deferment from the compulsory military service issued in accordance with the Law on Military Service and Serviceman’s Status, as well as with the period of medical re-examination established by the relevant articles of the law. Through the mediation of the Minister of Defense, passports can be also issued to male citizens who are 18 years old for another period to participate in educational, medical treatment, sports and cultural events.

The initiative extends the period of issuing passports with non-biometric data to the RA citizens until December 31, 2022 instead of January 1, 2022.

As Ara Fidanyan informed, after being adopted in the first reading, proposals were not presented related to the package.

The member of the RA NA Standing (Head) Committee on State and Legal Affairs Armen Khachatryan presented the endorsement of the Committee and called on the deputies to vote in favor of the initiative.
