Proposed Amendments and Addenda to Law on Military Service and Serviceman’s Status Debated
1 / 6

On April 29, the RA NA Standing Committee of Defense and Security debated in the first reading the draft law on Making Amendments and Addenda to the RA Law on the Military Service and the Serviceman’s Status authored by the NA Bright Armenia Faction.

The authors of the initiative propose to defer from the compulsory military service to citizens who had a wish to study in the second or the third level of higher education in the state authorized body of the field of military industry with whom a civil contract will be signed.

The key rapporteur Gevorg Gorgisyan noted that the conscripts will have an opportunity to continue the higher education by the implementation of the draft law in such format which on the one hand will encourage students to do science, on the other hand it will give an opportunity to the Armed Forces to use the corresponding scientific potential.

The Government did not endorse.

The RA Deputy Minister of Defense Arman Sargsyan has informed that there is a scientific battalion in the system of the Ministry of Defense still from 2018 where young specialists serve.

As a result of the debate, the draft law was not endorsed.
