Issues on Disaster Risk Reduction and Civil Protection Discussed

On April 22, the Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security Andranik Kocharyan met with the delegation led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Dmitry Mariyasin.

The Committee Chair highly assessed the support programmes being implemented by the UN which have great role in the development of Armenia.

Dmitry Mariyasin touched upon the issues on the implementation of the regional joint programmes and expressed readiness to deepen the cooperation in different directions.

The UNDP coordinators David Harutyunyan, Artak Voskanyan and Armen Chilingaryan presented the works implemented by the programmes Enhancing Human Security , Disaster Risk Reduction , Humanitarian Demining and Civil Protection . According to the specialists, there is necessity for serious legislative amendments and human resource training in the studied spheres.

Highlighting the implemented works by the assistance of the UNDP, Andranik Kocharyan underlined the seismic risk assessment, insurance and the topical issues of upgrading the awareness system beforehand in emergency situations.

The directions of the spheres by which the further cooperation is expedient to develop have also been discussed. In that context the steps taken aimed at the experts support, strengthening institutional capacity, the parliamentary diplomacy and the further development of parliamentarism were emphasized.
