Meeting with Members of Political and Security Committee of the Council of the EU

On October 5, the Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Armen Ashotyan, the Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on European Integration Naira Zohrabyan and the Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security Koryun Nahapetyan met with the members of the Political and Security Committee of the Council of the EU.

As the EU delegation members have noted, the Committee regularly implements monitoring in international different platforms and situations, proposing the EU strategic approaches and variants of political solutions. The Committee also implements the political control of the crisis and strategic management actions.

Welcoming the Chair of the Political and Security Committee of the Council of the EU, the Ambassador Walter Stevens and the delegation led by him, the Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Foreign Relations Armen Ashotyan highlighted the role of security and peace for the peoples living in our region. Evaluating the constructive approaches adopted by the Political and Security Committee of the Council of the EU, he wished the delegation members productive work and new achievements. Armen Ashotyan touched the steps taken in our country after the constitutional reforms, the works of harmonisation with legislation, the parliamentary oversight mechanisms and tools, the Armenian-Turkish relations and the NK conflict settlement, highlighting the provision of peace and stability in the region.

Naira Zohrabyan presented the works of the RA NA Standing Committee on European Integration to the delegation members.

Touching upon the problem of the freedom of speech, the representative of the opposition Tsarukyan Faction Naira Zohrabyan has assured that Armenia has essential progress in the sphere of freedom of speech in Armenia. She referred to the RA draft law on Prevention of Family Violence. Mrs Zohrabyan informed that parliamentary hearings would be held on this draft law.

The Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Defense and Security Koryun Nahapetyan emphasized the role of the parliamentary diplomacy within the frameworks of the international structures, which in his word, would promote the strengthening of democratic institutes in Armenia, as well as the civil society. Koryun Nahapetyan presented the amendments being implemented in the RA legislative field.

Thanking the NA deputies for the warm reception, the Ambassador Walter Stevens highlighted the decision of Armenia on passing into the system of parliamentary government, considering it as a significant step in the democracy development process.

He also talked about the procedure and perspectives of the RA-EU relations, the upcoming Summit agenda of the Eastern Partnership, the issues relating to the common political and security problems and challenges of the South Caucasus.
