Member of Armenian Delegation Naira Zohrabyan’s Speech in PACE Summer Session
1 / 1

“Dear Colleagues, I would have difficulty to recall how many times we have spoken about culture and democracy from this rostrum, about preserving the national minorities’ religious and cultural heritage in the CoE member states, as well as about the fact that the cultural vandalism should not have place in any member state of our organization. Our colleague Vesna Marjanovic touched upon a very important issue, and I agree with the rapporteur’s quotation that today in our dangerous world, culture has become a matter of security. Yes, Mrs Marjanovic, you are right, when you say that culture is a powerful means for the national minorities to preserve their identity, and culture is a powerful tool to prevent extremism and intolerance, which is one of the challenges of today’s world. But I cannot agree with you that Turkey, as you mentioned, is one of its best examples. Perhaps, in preserving its own culture Turkey may be an example for you, but in your place I would be interested in how Turkey treats the national minorities’ culture and religion. In your place I would get interested in how Turkey has destroyed the Armenian churches and historical-cultural monuments in its today’s territory. According to UNESCO data, in today’s territory of Turkey the prevailing part of several thousands of Armenian churches were destroyed. Immediately after the 1915 Genocide Turkey began to consistently commit cultural massacre, which continues until nowadays. The massacre being carried out towards the Armenian culture in Turkey pursues the goal to eliminate also the Armenians’ cultural heritage. Only weeks ago the Turkish press alarmed that the Armenian protestant half-destroyed church of the historical city of Kharberd in today’s territory of Turkey, which the Turks use as cattle shed and car parking, instead of restoring it they are going to destroy it, and they intend to build a hotel in the place of the unique church. In Turkey and its brother Azerbaijan, where the cemetery of historical cross-stones of Jugha was leveled to the ground, they try to eliminate any Armenian trace planned by the state. I would like to hope that in your next report you will touch upon these important problems, too. And as we talked about Turkey, dear colleagues, 11 MPs of Turkish origin of the German Bundestag, who voted for the Armenian Genocide recognition on June 2, are very seriously threatened by Erdogan and Turkish extremists. It is necessary to prevent this Turkish fascism because we know what it means to be the Young Turks’ inheritor.”

Dear colleagues,I would like first to thank the rapporteurs for what is an excellent text, in terms of political considerations and also from an academic point of view.
