1 / 4

On November 16 the Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs Koryun Nahapetyan met with the military heads of Senior Schools in Yerevan . The members of the Committee Khachatur Kokobelyan and Tevan Poghosyan also attended the meeting.

Koryun Nahapetyan has noted that the Committee led by him always focuses on the process of pre-military training of the youth, as one of the most important cornerstones for the increase of combat readiness, strengthening of discipline and improvement of other qualitative standards of the armed forces. In his word, “Initial Military Training (IMT)” subject being taught in senior schools and professional educational institutions is of special importance for upbringing patriotic young people and sowing certain responsible attitude towards the army and military art. Noting that every teacher’s sacred duty is the upbringing of the young people bearing national values, Mr Nahapetyan in this regard highlighted the role of those teaching the IMT subject, their character and organization of the young people’s military-patriotic upbringing with their personal example. In this context he has underlined that the Committee already cooperates with general educational institutions, visits schools to get acquainted with the teaching of the IMT subject and the problems on the spot. Koryun Nahapetyan also stated that the Committee will organize parliamentary hearings in the future to discuss the problems of pre-military training and conscription.

By Koryun Nahapetyan’s conviction, one of the most important elements of the national security is the upbringing of the young boys and girls familiar with the traditions of the Armenian Army, physically and morally healthy, robust, well-rounded and ready for the defense of the Motherland. “Only in case of having healthy and patriotic young people we can be sure that  Armenia ’s future is in firm hands,” said Mr Nahapetyan. In his word, it is necessary to provide in decent way the link with district military commissariats and military units, organize field training exercises, military-patriotic games, present them the problems of the Armed Forces, and which is the most important thing – the upbringing of them with the feeling of serving in the national army. In this context Mr Nahapetyan highlighted the patriotic work done by the military heads.

By Khachatur Kokobelyan’s assessment, we should take appropriate steps in order the schoolchildren would be interested in the subject and study it, as the role of this subject is great in the issue of loving and defending the Motherland.

Tevan Poghosyan also highlighted the teaching of the IMT subject and touched upon the content of the textbook. In his opinion, the military service should become compulsory also for the girls.

During the meeting the military heads of senior schools presented the problems of teaching the subject, touched upon the granting titles according to the posts occupied by the military heads, the importance of pre-conscription training, the creation of necessary preconditions for the military-patriotic upbringing in secondary schools, the revision of the programme and hours of the IMT subject, issues requiring legislative solutions. The military heads’ trainings, their exchange of experience, the establishment of the Senior Military Head Institute and equipment with logistics for the IMT subject were spotlighted. The attendees especially attached importance to the implementation of the steps directed to the strengthening of army-society link.

Koryun Nahapetyan proposed to set up a working group with the participation of the members of the Committee led by him, the representatives of the Ministries of Education and Science, and Defense and the military, aiming to comprehensively study the problems relating to the mentioned subject. He urged those present to actively participate in the works of the group and submit their recommendations to the Committee in written form.
