Galust Sahakyan Sends a Congratulatory Message on World Press Freedom Day
1 / 1

The NA President’s message reads: “Dear representatives of the media, I congratulate you on World Press Freedom Day.

Creating dignified conditions for the activity of the press freedom and media is as big responsibility, as making use of that freedom and applying it for the sake of society. This means exclusion of animosity and intolerance and partnership relations among the state, society and mass media, irrespective of the political position, direction of the latter, and the ideology and work style that is characteristic to any media. The basis for those relations is the interest of the same society which is prior both for the power guaranteeing the press freedom, and for the media practically bearing and realizing that freedom. The variety of the media, that exists among us, and their continuous activity document the perception and realization of that interest.

The establishment of the civil society is an uninterrupted process in our country. The state shows necessary legal and political support to that process, providing such an atmosphere and conditions of activities, with the availability of which the Armenian press can fully possess the press freedom and objectively respond to the problems of the society, publicize its interpellations and demands. Along with the responsibility the press freedom also demands courage of being abstained of speculating it, committing an offence against truth, not being tempted with opportunism and populism.

I am sure that our mass media will continue to assess the limits and possibilities of the press freedom with dignity led by the priority of truth and all-human values.

Dear journalists and representatives, I wish you success, welfare and optimism.”
