The Protocol Amending the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) was adopted by the General Council of the World Trade Organization back in 2005. The document provides a legal basis for WHO member countries to issue special compulsory licenses exclusively for the production and export of affordable generic drugs to other member countries that cannot produce sufficient quantities of necessary drugs for their patients.
According to the RA Deputy Minister of Economy Sevak Mikayelyan, the Agreement extends to developing and less developed countries.
It was noted that 111 WHO member countries joined the document. The deadline for the member countries to join the Protocol is December 31, 2025.
The member of the Standing (Head) Committee on Economic Affairs Davit Arushanyan presented the endorsement of the Committee and called on his colleagues to vote for it.
The bill on Ratification of the Protocol Amending the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) was debated at the NA sitting on September 9.
