Problems of Media Are at the Core of Discussions

After the war the problems of the media field are perceived in another way because we consider as a priority the war and post-war problems: the Chair of the NA Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs Taguhi Tovmasyan noted during the meeting held on September 26. The MP hosted the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Armenia Martina Schmidt, he Head of Division Cooperation on Freedom of Expression Ardita Abdiu and the International Expert Krisztina Rozgonyi.

Voicing the problems existing in the media field, Taguhi Tovmasyan touched upon the fact of targeting the journalists covering the war on the border from Azerbaijan. According to her, the targeting continues until now also through social networks. The MP highlighted the freedom of speech and the media equality in the country. In her opinion, there is a problem of media literacy in Armenia. “We don’t succeed fighting in this field, as the hate speech continues having a big audience among us,” the Committee Chair underlined. According to Taguhi Tovmasyan, the power should take steps in overcoming the problems of this sphere.

She also touched upon the legislation of the media field and added that in some cases the problems were not discussed with the representatives of the sphere.

Martina Schmidt expressed readiness for cooperating with the committees and the factions of parliament. Ardita Abdiu thanked Taguhi Tovmasyan for agreeing to take part in the discussion of the report on the needs assessment of the media field on September 27. The International Expert Krisztina Rozgonyi emphasized the work being done in the sphere, expressing hope that the presented considerations will promote the work of the media field improvement.
