NA President Alen Simonyan Meets with President of House of Representatives of Republic of Cyprus Annita Demetriou

On September 7, within the framework of Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments RA NA President Alen Simonyan met with the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Annita Demetriou. Touching upon the Armenian-Cypriot firm friendship, the NA President has underlined that it is conditioned by the mutual respect coming from the depth of the centuries, historical common past, commonalities of spiritual and cultural values and almost the same destiny.

Affirming the excellent inter-state and inter-parliamentary cooperation existing between the two countries, Alen Simonyan noticed that the relations between the legislative bodies of Armenia and Cyprus had been raised to a qualitative new more practical level due to bilateral efforts in recent years. He assured his colleague that after reformation of the Inter-Parliamentary Committee on Armenia-Cyprus cooperation maximum efforts would be directed at carrying out dynamic and effective cooperation between the two Committees.

According to the NA President, Armenia highlights Armenia-Cyprus-Greece trilateral cooperation, which opens new perspectives of expansion for collaboration in different spheres in bilateral, as well as trilateral format. Regarding the priority of cooperation with Cyprus also in the format of Armenia-European Union relations, Alen Simonyan highlighted the full and effective application of the RA-EU Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement. During the discussion the sides referred to the Azerbaijani-Turkish military aggression against Artsakh. The NA President expressed his gratitude to friendly Cyprus for the principled position and support to the Artsakh people, particularly stressing the humanitarian assistance being provided by the Government of Cyprus to the Artsakh Armenians suffered from the Azerbaijani aggression.

The colleagues talked about the Cyprus issue and the actions damaging the dialogue by Turkey. In this context Alen Simonyan reaffirmed the constant support shown by Armenia to Cyprus in the international organizations, noting the necessity of the peaceful settlement for the problem through negotiations. The President of the National Assembly documented that Cyprus could rely on the unreserved support of Armenia in its struggle for restoration of justice of brotherly Cyprus, freedom and reunification of the Motherland.

Thanking her counterpart for his kind words the President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus also emphasized the close ties through years strengthened between two countries. She expressed her gratitude for the support shown by Armenia on the problem of Cyprus, stressing that the solution of all problems with Turkey would only be through legal way.

She related to the resolutions adopted by the House of Representatives of Parliament of Cyprus on the peaceful settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict, where the violations occurred by Azerbaijan and the unacceptable, illegal actions were recorded.

At the end of the meeting the sides affirmed the importance of the bilateral, trilateral, as well as multi-lateral relations and the necessity of mutual visits’ activation.
