On August 17, the RA NA President Alen Simonyan received the delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay Francisco Bustillo Bonasso.
Welcoming the guest, the Head of the legislative body has noted that Armenia greatly highlights the development and strengthening of the relations with Uruguay. “Regardless of the fact that the geographical extremely great distance separates Armenia and Uruguay, the relations of our countries and peoples have never suffered,” Alen Simonyan underlined.
Speaking about the Armenian-Uruguayan inter-state ties, the Head of the Parliament stated that since the establishment of the diplomatic relations mutually beneficial cooperation had been succeeded to enhance: “The friendship between our countries is based on the mutual respect, trust and mutual support.”
Alen Simonyan has expressed satisfaction over the opening of the Consulate General of Uruguay in Yerevan in 2019, which is an important boost for bilateral cooperation. The NA President also welcomed the opening of the Embassy of Uruguay in Armenia in the near future.
Thanking the NA President for the reception, the Foreign Minister of Uruguay has informed that this is his first visit to Armenia. The guest talked about the necessity of developing bilateral relations.
During the meeting cooperation between the Friendship Groups also was touched upon. Alen Simonyan expressed conviction that in the near future a Friendship Group with the representative members of Uruguay would be created.
With regard to the process of the Armenian Genocide recognition, Alen Simonyan documented: “Everybody knows in Armenia that Uruguay is the first country to recognize the Armenian Genocide.” In this context Francisco Bustillo Bonasso informed that yesterday he visited Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex and left a note in the Book of Honorable Guests. He noted that the history of Armenia could be summed up in two words: pain and hope. “The pain that the Armenian people were faced during the whole history, but hope for the further wonderful future which awaits the Armenian people,” the guest added.
The sides also talked about the large number of the Armenian community in Uruguay, underlining its role in strengthening of the Armenian-Uruguayan relations.
