PACE President: Council of Europe Supports Democratisation Processes Occurring in Armenia

On March 27, the RA NA President Ararat Mirzoyan and the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Liliane Maury Pasquier made a joint statement after the bilateral meeting. In his speech the President of the parliament noted that they discussed the spheres of cooperation with PACE during the meeting. According to the President of the National Assembly, the cooperation with the Council of Europe and its institutes, PACE, the Human Rights Commissioners, the Venice Commission and the role of other all structures for supporting the processes of the democratic reforms in our country were highlighted.

“We have reaffirmed the reality that after the non violent, revolution of April-May of the last year the democratic processes in Armenia are irreversible. We have evaluated the high assessments voiced by the representatives of the Council of Europe and PACE monitoring co-rapporteurs on democratic processes, as well as extraordinary parliamentary elections occurring in our country,” the Head of the legislative body said. Ararat Mirzoyan informed that they also touched upon issues on the Armenian Genocide, protection of human rights and freedoms.

Welcoming the attendees PACE President Liliane Maury Pasquier thanked the NA President of Armenia for the reception and discussions.

Liliane Maury Pasquier has informed that it has been once again reaffirmed that the Council of Europe backs the democratisation processes occurring in Armenia, and it is ready for further support. She has noted that at the meeting certain problems are referred to what Europe faces and which shall be solved. “In general, they are violence, hate, legal equality between women and men, fight against populism and nationalism. They are challenges for Europe, and we should fight with united efforts against such phenomena in order to have safer, more reliable and peaceful continent,” Liliane Maury Pasquier noted.
