First Sitting of RA NA Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs Held

On February 7, the first sitting of the RA NA Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs, having two items on the agenda.

The Committee Chair Naira Zohrabyan has informed that the Bright Armenia Faction nominated Ani Samsonyan’s candidacy for being elected in the position of Deputy Chair of the Committee. The proposal was done stemming from the principle of the formation of the RA NA Committees, the mutual political agreement of the parliamentary factions.

As a result of voting Ani Samsonyan was unanimously elected. She assured that she would work with responsibility, justifying the shown trust.

The MPs also approved the work order of the Committee, after which touched upon the upcoming programmes.

The Committee Chair Naira Zohrabyan has informed that more than hundred letters were received, where the authors propose public debates on different items. The problems in the sphere of protection of human rights are many, according to Naira Zohrabyan, this Committee will become one of the most important platforms of protection of human rights. The MPs presented a number of recommendations.

Let us note that the Committee members will have meetings with the RA Defender of Human Rights Arman Tatoyan, the RA Minister of Justice Artak Zeynalyan, the officials in the criminal executive institutions, the RA Ministry of Health Care and the RA Prosecutor’s General.

Besides, in the coming days the Committee members will visit the RA some criminal-executive institutions, Abovyan Women’s and Children’s’ Penal Colony, etc.

The Committee members proposed also to amend some articles of the RA Law on Mass Media. The Committee designs to hold public debate regarding this issue, inviting editors.

The member of the RA NA My Step Faction Taguhi Tovmasyan referred to the problem of those sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Committee will focus on the problem of those sentenced to life imprisonment, the RA laws on the rights of the persons undergone to domestic violence and on Mass Media.
