On September 19, the President of the RA National Assembly Ara Babloyan received the Council of Europe (CoE) Commissioner for Human Rights Dunya Miyatovic. The Chair of the RA NA Standing Committee on Health Care and Social Affairs Hakob Hakobyan also attended the meeting.

The goal of the visit of the CoE Commissioner for Human Rights to Armenia is to discuss the issues of women’s rights, gender equality and family violence, as well as the protection of the rights of some vulnerable groups of the society.

Welcoming Dunya Miyatovic’s first visit in this position, Ara Babloyan thanked the Council of Europe for the work done in cooperation with our country and strengthening of democracy in Armenia by the organization.

Touching upon the draft law on disability and the problems of the children with disability, the Head of the parliament underlined that they should have equal rights and be a full-fledged member of the society.

The NA President presented a comprehensive model on Early Revelation of the Children’s Disability and Social Further Inclusion (Integration) which supposes the health, social, educational and a coordinated work of local self-government bodies.

“If this principle is preserved then an opportunity is given to the children to get best results in the process of fully integrating to the society,” the Head of the parliament.

Speaking about the Lanzarote Convention on Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, Ara Babloyan has noted that the document is at the phase of discussions and expressed hope it will be ratified soon.

Expressing her gratitude to the RA NA President for the reception and the opportunity of discussion of the existing problems, the CoE Commissioner for Human Rights Dunya Miyatovic expressed confidence that such favourable discussions would be continuous. Touching upon the events in Armenia, noted that irrespective of political views and the change of positions the human rights should be protected.

The interlocutors highlighted the role of the Office of the Human Rights Defender in Armenia and the effective cooperation with the organizations functioning in our country, as well as the international organizations.
