Eduard Sharmazanov: Successors of Madatov and Loris-Melikov Liberated Shushi from Azerbaijani Occupation in 1992
1 / 6

On March 6, the RA NA Vice President Eduard Sharmazanov attended the Armenian-Russian International Conference with the heading The Treaty of Turkmenchay: 190 Years. The History and the Present. Let us note that the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, the Association of the Regional Scientific and Educational Centres and the Integration and Development NGOs initiated the Conference.

The RA NA Vice President delivered a speech:

“Dear participants of the Conference,

the Armenian-Russian relations have history of centuries. During the Kievаn Rus period economic, military, political and cultural ties have been formed between the two peoples, about which the Armenian acclaimed historian Stepanos Asoghik and the father of the Russian Historigraphy Nikolay Karamzin talked about.

Since the beginning of the 18th century a new page has been opened in the Armenian-Russian relations which is related to Israyel Ori, and later to Hovsep Emin and Shamir Shahamirian to seek the restoration of the Armenian statehood with the help of Russia

During the same period the representatives of the Russian Empire led by the famous Commander Alexander Suvorov held negotiations with the Armenian clergymen of Russia. The idea of restoring the Armenian statehood with the capital Yerevan in the 18th century was laid in the basis of those negotiations.

The coincidence of the state interest of Russia and the Armenian people's freedom fighting resulted in the fact that during the military actions in the Caucasus in the 19th century the Armenian people were mainly assisting the Russians.

Dear colleagues,

In 1828 the signing of the Treaty of Turkmenchay, and then the creation of the Armenian Marz were important steps on the way to the restoration of the Armenian independent statehood. The Armenian Marz had its own coat of arms with Armenian symbols: Ararat Mountain with Noah's Ark and the Holy See Echmiadzin. The Armenian culture got a new impetus of development.

The Armenians and the Russians fought together in the Russian-Turkish wars: in the years of the World War I and the Great Patriotic War. The successors of the very Valerian Madatov, Mikayel Loris-Melikov, Hovhannes Baghramyan and Hamazasp Babajanyan liberated Shushi from the Azerbaijani occupation in 1992.

Dear participants of the Conference,

Today, the Armenian-Russian relations genuinely are of ally character: they dynamically develop in the political, economic, military and cultural directions and stem from the interests of the two countries and peoples.

I wish effective work to all participants of the Conference.”
