Sourik Khachatryan was born on August 1, 1956 in Goris.

Mr. Khachatryan graduated with a degree in economics from Syunik Progress University in 1995 and from the RA Public Administration Academy in 2003. He was awarded four medals: Marshal Baghramyan (1998), Mayrakan Erakhtagitutyun (Mother's Gratitude) (2000), Garegin Nzhdeh (2001) and a 2nd Rank Martakan Khach (War Cross) Order (2002).

From 1972-1979 he was a skilled worker at the Goris Car Repairs Plant. He spent the next three years taking part in the Karabagh war for liberation as a commander in Yerkrapah Volunteer Union. From 1991-1994 he was the commander of the Goris batĀ­talion under the RA Ministry of Defense. From 1994-1996 he was the first deputy chairĀ­man in the Executive Committee of Goris City Council. From 1996-1999 he was first the chairman of the Executive Committee, then mayor of Goris and also the head of the Yerkrapah Regional Council.

1995-1999 was his first term as a deputy in the NA (electoral district #146) and he was a member first of the Reforms Deputy Group and later the Yerkrapah Deputy Group.

1999-2003 was his second term as a deputy in the NA (electoral district # 70) and he was a member of the NA Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture and Youth Affairs. He was also a member first of the Unity Faction and later the Armenia Deputy Group.

On May 25, 2003 he was reelected to the NA (electoral district # 52) andhe serves on the NA Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture and Youth Affairs. He is a member of both the Republican Party of Armenia Faction and party.

Mr. Khachatryan is married and has four children.

With his appointment as the Governor of Sjunik Marz (25.03.2004) his deputy mandate was terminated. <
