Message by the RA National Assembly President Galust Sahakyan on Remembrance Day of the Armenian Genocide Victims
1 / 1

The NA President’s message read s: “Dear compatriots, every year this day is special for our memory and inner world, special in terms of the words directed to already 100 years old past pain and future, pain emerged from the crime, to which no statute of limitations apply, and words born from the same crime, without time and geographical limitation.

Hundred years ago in the Ottoman Empire xenophobia raised its hand on humanism, darkened consciousness on rationality , nationalism on tolerance. And the greatest and first crime of the century against mankind was born, the Armenian Genocide. It was perpetrated as a state policy, as a thoroughly conceived plan to forcibly deprive the indigenous people from the motherland and the property, exterminate the present and the future of its gene pool. Millions of sons of an entire nation were massacred for being an Armenian, but they failed to extirpate that people due to being an Armenian.

For already hundred years the pain has born and begets memory towards the massacred martyrs and lost motherland, enforcing struggle and demand, restoration of justice and recognition. For already hundred years the pain has born and begets gratitude towards those perceiving and sharing it, those condemning the crime and demanding punishment, instigating them to struggle against denialism. For already hundred years the pain has born will and spirit of living, instigating to survive, create and revive.

The Armenian Genocide is the crime, the punishment of which is recorded in the written and non-written codes, and its punishment is inevitable irrespective of the rotation of chronology, for which punishing is the duty of the democratic systems, legal states, simply moral societies and honest-minded leaders towards the people subjected to genocide, towards the danger of non-eliminated genocides threatening the entire mankind, a duty recorded by the historical and legal norms, duty of soul and heart. And the more the dates for duty are postponed, the bigger are the probability of possible genocides.

Dear compatriots, for 100 years the pain of the wound of genocide is in our soul and our emotion al experience , in the memories and stories of our compatriots who have survived the Genocide, the work style of the states, institutions and figures who have condemned the Genocide. However, the symbol of our hundred years of pain is not only the forget-me-not, but the immortelle, and the combination of these two is the pledge of our peoples’ stable optimism. Therefore, the Centennial is the anniversary of tragedy, but not lamentation, as during 100 years we have repeatedly proved that we can reach from tragedy to victories, whereas the lamentation is destructive for the present days and fertile soil for the hopeless future. Hence, we should continue living and creating, become stronger beyond the 100 years border, once again documenting our genetic ability to rebirth which has given us strength both 100 years ago, during 100 years, and will give strength for hundreds and millions of years. We are obliged, despite tragedies and tragedians, crimes and criminals, despite the attempts of continuing the denialism of the 21st century of the genocide of the 20th century, for the sake of the Republic of Armenia, the Armenian statehood of Artsakh, the Armenian Diaspora and for the sake of the united Armenianness, which is able to transform the duty into demand, the memory into the instrument of justice and through them transform the vision of the motherland into material existence.”
